Three Bin Collection Service

Edward River Council are giving back to the Community as a thank you for accomplishing such low contamination rates in our green bins.

ERC are giving away FREE ute and trailer loads, and bags of compost to Deniliquin residents.

You’ll need to bring your ute, trailer or bags or buckets along to the Deniliquin Sale Yards on Saturday 25 October, 8am till 2 pm.

The event is open to all residents of Edward River Council.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE ARRIVAL:

• Traffic management will be in place and must be adhered to in the interests of public safety.
• There will be 2 designated compost piles, one pile is for utes and trailers (we will have a bobcat operator managing the area) and another pile is for DIY filling of bags, buckets and smaller vehicles.
• Residents at the pile designated for utes and trailers are to remain in their vehicle at all times - vehicles will be directed by staff to the appropriate spot to pull up.
• Residents loading with their own shovels, buckets and bags will be able to help themselves at a designated spot.
• Residents wanting to DIY fill bags must bring their own bags, buckets and shovels. These will NOT be provided by Council.
• Children and dogs are to remain in cars at all times.
• Loads of compost must be covered, by law. There will be a separate area to pull up and cover your trailer or ute.
• There will be 80 tonnes of compost available on a first-come, first-served basis.
• This event may be postponed if a significant weather event is forecast or occurs.

Edward River's new system of waste collection starts in July 2024 to divert recycling and organics away from landfill.

The new “3 bin” system allows food and garden waste to be collected from households, as well as a separate collection for materials to be recycled. Deniliquin residents have three separate 240-litre bins, with organics collected weekly, and recycling and general waste collected fortnightly.

What Goes in Each Bin?

Understanding what goes into each bin is crucial for the success of the 3-bin system. Here's a rundown:

Green Bin (Organics)

• Accepted: Food scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, meat and bones, coffee grounds, tea bags, garden clippings, leaves, small branches, and compostable caddy liners.
• Not Accepted: Plastic bags, glass, metals, or any non-compostable items.

Yellow Bin (Recycling)

• Accepted: Paper, cardboard, glass bottles and hard, aluminium cans, steel cans, hard plastics (marked 1-7), milk and juice cartoons.
• Not Accepted: Soft plastics (like plastic bags), food waste, garden waste, or hazardous materials.

Red Bins (General Waste)

• Accepted: Non-recyclable household waste, soft plastics, nappies, broken ceramics, and other non-compostable materials.
• Not Accepted: Recyclables, organic waste, hazardous waste.

Regional Collaboration

In July 2024, the townships within the council areas of Berrigan, Edward River Council (Deniliquin), Greater Hume Shire, Hay Shire, Leeton, and the townships in the Northern area of Federation Council will join much of the region in launching the 3-bin kerbside recycling system in their communities. This collaborative effort highlights the region's collective commitment to enhancing waste management and sustainability.

Edward River Council is excited to announce the launch of its new 3 bin system, starting from Monday 1st July.

The service, delivered under a new contract, is a significant change for the Deniliquin community and will help to extend the lifespan of the current landfill.

Mayor Peta Betts recently inspected the new trucks that will be used for the service, “I’m impressed by the advanced technology they feature that is expected to significantly improve customer service and allow for easy monitoring of bin contamination.”

Residents are encouraged to start using their new bins immediately.

To ensure a smooth transition, please leave your old bins upside down on the nature strip, so that they can be removed by the contractor.

From Monday 1 July onwards, only the new black-bodied bins will be emptied, starting with the Green and Red Bins.

Anna Kelly from Council's Green Team will be available to answer any questions about the new system. Anna will be at the library from 10 AM to 12 PM on Tuesdays to provide assistance and information.

Edward River Council is gearing up to introduce its new recycling and organics system with residents now starting to receive their new bin sets ahead of the official July start date.

The delivery from contractor, J.R. Richards, consists of three brand-new big bins, a little kitchen caddy, compostable bin liners and an information pack. Edward River Council is urging residents to store the items correctly until the new service begins on July 1.

Interim CEO Gary Arnold said households should pay particular attention to the kitchen caddy and its contents.

“When you receive your delivery, by all means store the big bins securely outside somewhere. But with the little kitchen caddy, please bring it indoors to keep the contents dry. There is a year’s worth of caddy liners in the little bin that are designed to break down in compost, so getting them damp or wet will shorten their life.”

Mr Arnold said the caddy delivery also contained an information pack with handy hints and tips on waste sorting, along with a fridge magnet with the year’s collection dates for easy reference.

To facilitate the transition, residents should keep using their existing bins until they are collected in the last week of June, after which they can place them outside, upside down, for collection and recycling. These old bins will no longer be serviced post-June. From July 1st onwards, residents can commence using the new 3 bins.
